Day 1: Kincaid Park

This is Ben Dexter with Write Alaska News reporting to you on Monday, July 16. Today students met for day one of Migrant Ed's Write Alaska program. During the next two weeks, students will be working together in the classroom as well as in the wilderness. Despite the early morning start time, students managed to stay awake for three hours in the classroom. It probably helped that the teachers and tutors were so charismatic and engaging. When asked how they thought the class would go, the students responded unanimously, "Awesome! I think it's going to be great!" The class took no time before busting into a rigorous work schedule that rivals the difficult hiking they will be doing in the coming weeks. Students had to write, but the real challenge seemed to be getting the computers to cooperate. Still, the class persevered, made it through the classwork, then headed out to Kincaid Park for a short hike, lunch, and some play time. Now here's Will with the weather.

Thanks Ben. This is Will Wright reporting on weather for Write Alaska News. When students first arrived this morning it looked like we were in for a grey, wet day. However, by the time the class headed out for the trip to Kincaid it had turned into a gorgeous day with only some minor wind. This made for an enjoyable day out at the park. The class went for a short hike through the Kincaid stadium and along one of the flatter trails. The weather report looks good for the coming week as well.

This is Ms. Banks reporting on the wonderful world of sports on Monday, July 16, 2012. We had a blast playing ultimate frisbee and kickball. The ultimate frisbee game got very competitive as Presley's shoe broke in the process. This did not stop this beast of a player, because he continued to out score the other team. Both teams were actively participating and had a lot of fun! The kickball game was enjoyed by all- Carmela kept the game going as each team player had a chance to showcase their athleticism and kicking skills. We are all looking forward to more games and fun in the days coming!
