Last Day of Write Alaska/Slideshow
Well, Write Alaska 2012 has now come to a close. There's still some summertime left for everyone to enjoy. Despite the fact that we're all exhausted from these past two weeks, it also feels a little like we had a vacation. We got to spend a lot of time in the wilderness. For the first time in the history of this class, we actually had a group reach Gull Rock! I was doubting whether that would ever really happen.
As we finished the program today, students gathered in the atrium to present their finals, a reading of an original work of writing from the past two weeks. Every student shared, although some required a little extra push to get on stage. You all did an awesome job. Seeing students share what they've written is one of my favorite things as a teacher.
Another one of my favorite things to see is a student graduating, and that's just how we got to end this program. The presentations culminated with the graduation of our own Walker, who did an awesome job in the class and on the trails. I'm excited to hear about what he does next and, if he puts the same effort into it as he did with this class, I'm sure it'll be great.
Anyway, it's time for everyone to start planning their last days of summer before heading back to school. I don't know about you, but I think I'll go hiking! This is Ben Dexter signing off for Write Alaska 2012.

Day 9: Alyeska and Winner Creek
Perfect day to go outside and get out of town!
That's exactly what we did.
Yesterday Write and Science Alaska went out of Anchorage to go on two wonderful hikes.
We had a choice to hike up a mountain or hike on a trail by the hotel.
I, myself, took the smooth trail by the hotel, with a smaller group.
It was beautiful! The clear baby blue sky standing behind the tall tresses
With the passing smiling faces and the singing voices bringing us happiness.
There were dogs all over the place. It made me wants a puppy ever more then I have ever wanted one.
It was a hot summer day! But it was okay, the shade on the trail made it cool down some.
We did make it past the 1.5 mile mark an hour into the trail.
On the way to there we heard the sounds of water and birds, and the sounds of footsteps.
To me the whole thing was just beautiful and I'm happy that I could be a part of it.
We did take it easy and had a wonderful time!
-Tia
It was really hot yesterday as we went hiking. Myself and some of the Write Alaska students went on a hike to Mount Alyeska. We got to see some beautiful sights of the houses and go to places we hadn't been to. Many of us were really tired, but still we all made it to the top. We took some nice pictures of the construction workers on the mountain peak.
We all hiked up a steep hill. It felt like some of us were about to fall back. The two main people that had to walk up the steep were Ben And I. We had to motivate the rest of the girls to catch up (poor Ben). But the main thing we had to do was make it to the top. We had a cool breeze while hiking to the top, and a hot, steaming sun to give us a tan, but we made it to the top. Everybody was kind of tired, and some of the students were motivated, the main thing is that everybody had fun. Congrats to the people that made it up Alyeska.
P.S: The lady in the tram was really funny while we were riding down.

Day 8: Palmer Creek Trail and Fishing in Hope
Aloha, my name is Presley and I'm your reporter for today. Well, let's just say that the weather was very hot and it looked more like a day to sit back and relax than to fish. So that's what some of our fishermen did. Some were sitting and some were having what those singers call a jam session. But the ones who were fishing did a good job as Sheadon, Bobby, Joe and myself caught some mighty fine salmon.
W
This is Walker reporting on the hike on Wednesday. In the mountains near Hope we were driven by staff to a park called Palmer Creek. From there we started our hike. The whole hike was on a dirt road. The whole day was virtually sunny with few clouds. Pretty much the whole hike we were near a small river that seemed like it was made by the snow in the mountains but i'm not sure about that. Covering the edge of the road were many purple, red and yellow flowers. At the half-way point of the hike we all had ourselves a snowball fight. Ben took a picture of everyone in the middle of throwing snowballs at him. The scenery was beautiful with views from small hills that showed the whole mountain valley.

Football"How Bad Do You Want It"
Success is the key to win not fall
so success is the key I use to play football.
it pumps me up when the crowd scream
as we play not as one man player but as a team
you play your position that you most fit
and then the big Question come to your coaches mind.
how bad do you want it.
I practice hard to show how bad i want it
I show up to show how bad I want it
I hit as hard as i can to show how bad i want it
I never miss a day of practice to show how bad i want it
I run hard to show how bad i want it
I try to start in the game to show how bad i want it
I'm the future football player.

We are just a small family,
Bond that will never be broken.
The love we share is stronger then no other
The memories we have, shall never fade
Your beautiful smile is what gives me chills
The way you laugh brings us joy!
Its just us and we shall make it;
no matter what happens.
All of us will stand tall, not letting anybody knocking us down
Will all my love from me to you!

The journey to success
Success is a journey,a journey in life
Takes time and patients to get everything right
Success doesn't just happen in a day or two or over night
must work hard, keep trying and you'll be alright.
Stick on the journey road all the way
all the time and effort you put in will come in a reward
at the end of the day.

Cadeesha's poem
I saw mountains and animals
It was awesome and phenomenal.
Viliami's poems are dope
Keep fighting for your mom, never give up hope.
This program has been legit
We be riding and chilling on the bus, like we were in a corvette.
I hear an explosion, I see someone fall and slip
I peeked and laughed, trying to hide in momma's whip.
I am from the ten piece nuggets and large fries, they mistaken my name by Keisha
Yall already know my name is Cadeesha.

She is my angel,
from up in heaven.
sent down like,
Gods only present.
She is on my side,
through thick and thin.
She knows what to,
say to lift my chin.
She misses me when
I'm in school, but I always
tell her I love and miss her too.

Joseph's quick write poem
My final dream is football
the coach yells at you and tells you the call.
Here comes the hike
and you get the ball carrier in sight.
Snap, crackle, pop
you get the final stop.
The team gets the victory
it will go down in history.
The best players go to East
because we are all beast.
the coach yells at you and tells you the call.
Here comes the hike
and you get the ball carrier in sight.
Snap, crackle, pop
you get the final stop.
The team gets the victory
it will go down in history.

Someone who
Someone who knows just what to say.
Someone who can brighten my day.
Someone who is always right.
Someone who doesn't give up on a fight.
Someone who never shows tears.
Someone who doesn't want to lose her kids and that's her BIGGEST fear.
Someone who can take all pain and play softball with a back strain.
Someone who is MOM.
My mom is someone who I can't replace she's someone who's love is safe.

Pink Fishing in Hope
If you could go
fishing with a friend who would it be?
I would go with Ms. Banks
I would go with Ms. Banks
back to Hope and go
for pinks and
for pinks and
silvers and snag humpys and go for
king salmon when it's open and go fishing.
Rubik's Cube
Does it puzzle everybody?
Or just the ones that don't understand it?
I see it frustrate people,
makes them want to break it.
Or rearrange the color orientation,
by pealing its stickers.
Or take it apart to put it together.
But all you have to do
is twist and turn.
Till you learn
what to do
Or just the ones that don't understand it?
I see it frustrate people,
makes them want to break it.
Or rearrange the color orientation,
by pealing its stickers.
Or take it apart to put it together.
But all you have to do
is twist and turn.
Till you learn
what to do
Winter Wonderland by Mallory
The very place I call my home,
is the land where the Moose roam.
Ice and snow covers the ground,
to the winter days we are bound.
Shorten days and long frosty nights,
Falling snow limits the sights.
As the day grows old and the temperature drops,
In this Frozen land, all times seems to have stop.
While outside, you require hats and gloves
It is these winter days that I love.

Music,Singing,Listening and playing
I see you on the big screen, you see me chasing my
dreams we kinda do the same thing we're
not so different are we.
Music singing listening and playing
a whole new world to escape to
just sit back and imagine
like the super stars living
the new fashion in a mansion.
Music singing listening and playing
Just think about it, its another language
to other people it makes them go insane.
listen to the bass slapping and the lyrics flow
when you see everyone dancing now thats a show.
Music singing listening and playing
dont you love the taste of it
listening to music while eating makes it
taste 10X's better
dang it now i gotta stain on my sweater.
Music singing listening and playing
A cool refreshing smell like a
fabreeze spray spreading.
Music listening singing and playing
Picking and strumming the guitar.
when your feeling the vibes
its a good life.
It takes away the pain
like getting stabbed by a knife
fingers rubbing and strumming the six strings
block out your mind out of all the nonsense in the world
and don't think about a thing.

Write Alaska's fun Write Alaska's great
there were many sandwiches that i ate
I don't like to fish that's why I hike
Yesterday I saw people on their bikes
I'm about to graduate and my family is proud
I'm so happy that I might become loud
I don't like to sit on one place for to long
Sitting on a bus for two hours is just wrong
If i had a choice between this and school
I would choose Write Alaska because it is cool

Bobby's Name Poem
I like my name
I'd keep it the same
I like it a lot
It can't be bought
I'm not sure where its from
I don't like plums
Its fine for me
But I lost my key
My name is fun and cool
I sometimes act like a fool.
I'd keep it the same

Shaista's shadow poem
I am from this place where pretty cars race,
where sweet carmel apples have this lovely taste.
I am from a place where people party and party
all night and day,
where police officers had no say.
Music was nothing but oldies and goodies,
where no pain was no gain.

Tia's Shadow Poem !
I am from the harsh cold winters, and the beauty that surrenders me in the summer.
The flight of planes, never ending adventures.
The scent of nature and exhaust that flows in my hair
I am from the sweat of the basketball courts and the wind of the football field.
I am from the make up that covers my face. I still show who I truly am.
I shall never deny the love of my family. So strong and proud!
The love of music is where I'm from, that shall never die.

My mind scrambles as
I close my eyes
I speak from my heart and
I promise I won't lie.
Football is for wussies
Soccer is for girls
Rugby is for Men!
This is why I gotta give
rugby 100%!
I listen to music to keep
me going. I hate winter
because all it does is keep
snowing.
My heart beating, lungs collapse
I'm so grateful for the
Migrant Ed Write Alaska
staff.
Dreaming that I am watching
myself sleeping. I look at myself and
although it sounds pretty crazy
I then realize why my parents named
me after my uncle Viliami.
Life, Life so challenging!
Sometimes I have people
making fun of me.
I am over weight and I am
over it! As long as my mom
fought through cancer,
I am living and fighting.
If your not busy living then
you are busy dying.
I close my eyes
I speak from my heart and
I promise I won't lie.

Shadow Poem by Sheadon
I'm from the gridiron
where you train to be the best.
I'm from the stove where the team mom made me spaghetti
I listen to rap music where you get hyped for the game
I'm from the stadium where everybody knows my name, Mr. Pain.
I'm from the pros, but nobody knows, haha, my name is Joe.
I'm going to the top and I will not stop,
I'm from a place where theres more than one race.
Success is a running chase where I always stand first place.
I can't be beat, will not be beat unless you cheat.
I"m from a grateful family where I feel so loved.

I am from the twisting, turning tunnels of our snow caves.
I am from the yips and yells of my first solve on the Rubik's cube.

Day 7: McHugh Creek
Hi It's Joseph and Eric reporting from Write Alaska! Tuesday was cloudy with moderate temperatures so the hike went great. We were able to all make it back onto the bus and back to the ASD building with time to spare. When we stopped in the middle of the hike, the scenery was amazing. We were over looking the Cook Inlet and the mountains with all of the cars below. McHugh Creek was a pretty easy because it wasn't as long as the other hikes. There was some evidence on the trail that there had recently been a bear on the trail.
To keep the hike fun, we started clapping rhythms for others to copy. Everyone clapped together and kept the beat. Once we made it to the top we felt it was easy compared to recent hikes. We would recommend this hike to other students on a similarly nice day.

Joseph's Shadow Poem
I am from the desert
the cactus and the heat.
I am from the outside
and the stadium that the professionals play
from the cardinal
and the robin.
I'm from the plane
from the sand to the ocean to the cold
the turbulence from landing
from the hot to the cold.
I'm from the gridiron
the hike of the ball to the whistle
from half time to the bus ride back
the victory to the next practice.

Day 6: South Fork Eagle River Falls
This is Shaista coming to you with the report of South Fork River Falls in Eagle River, AK. This day started out with the crazy rain. The fear of changing plans because of the weather had shivered staff, but after we had eaten our Costco pizza and delicious salad and fruit for lunch, we all headed towards Eagle River. We arrived while it was still raining, but all students and staff geared up in our lovely rain coats and ponchos that were packed in our handy backpacks. We started up this hike and I was surprised that it wasn't as difficult as the previous hikes. I also noticed all the beautiful houses on the hill/mountain top. The higher we got up, you could see the beautiful way the clouds covered over the valley, houses and mountains. Sadly, we didn't have enough time to make it all the way to the top, but we did have fun. The one thing I loved most was the lovely tunes that Presley, Daniel and Viliami were singing on the hike.

Day 5: Coastal Trail
First we'll hear from Mallory:
On Friday, July 20th, 2012, Our class, Write Alaska, went on a bike ride from Elderberry Park downtown, all the way to Kincaid Park. Students rented bikes from the bike rental near the downtown park, but some staff brought their own. Down the bike trail we went. From there, we had an interesting trip, ranging from students almost getting lost to a student getting injured with a nasty bruise on her leg from her foot slipping off her pedal, to a moose off the side of the trail. We went through many hills with twists and turns, through forests, and over bridges. All in all, it was a fun and exhausting trip.

Now here's Cadeesha:
What an exhausting bike ride on Friday. The sun wasn't out, it was cloudy and kind of rainy.
Even though it was windy and cool, no one gave up on making it to the end.
It wasn't sunny, but we were still sweating. That trail was so long it felt like we riding up to heaven.
When we made it to the end, everybody was just out of energy. Legs were sore, especially our bottoms.
It was hard going up the big hills, but the best part is that everybody made it safely.

Day 4: Byron Glacier and Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
Good morning Write Alaska!
Hi, I'm Viliami. As I look out today, I see that the sky is partly cloudy, but the sun beaming. We were at a high of 72 degrees and low at 63 degrees. Mountaintops are partly covered with snow. Clouds are moving quickly, even though the sun was hot it wasn't so hot thanks to the cool breeze for keeping us nice and cool and refreshing. For tomorrow we are hoping that the weather will be on our side for a lovely day as we bike ride to Kincaid. Thank you for this time and I'd like to turn the time over to Bobby for our news today.
Thank you Viliami. We went on a hike today to Byron Glacier and the scenery was absolutely great. The students were having a good time and enjoying themselves on the rocks. There we other hikers there as well. A good day of hiking and the snacks were great. There were Ritz Handi-Snacks, Trail Mix, and Trail Mix granola bars. I prefer the snack over the hikes. But, then again, I prefer food over almost anything. The hike was nice and short instead of like Wednesday's hike, which was long, difficult, and tiring. After our hike we went to Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to see animals. There we saw black bears, elk, moose, and some musk ox. The bears' names were Kuma and Ooli. I did not get the names of the herbivores because there were too many and none of the workers were there.

Day 3: Hope/Gull Rock
We had so much fun goofing around and telling jokes on the bus. We had a lot of stuff to do while we were fishing and we did a lot of fun stuff. We did so much in Hope and we were beat, so we slept on the bus. I was so happy to go home. I was tired when I got home, and my dog was so excited to see me.
Jean also brought a couple kids for a walk around Hope. It was beautiful! We saw a big, old cafe and a gift shop in a log cabin. There were also lots of bugs and flowers.
This is Nadria reporting from hiking. It was a great day on the trail. The weather was amazing, it wasn’t too hot and it wasn’t too cold and luckily no rain. It was a longgg ways to walk. It felt like it was never going to end. Luckily, we didn't see any bears and they didn’t see us. We walked, talked and some people even started to sing.
We walked up hills and down hills, we even jumped over little, tiny flowing rivers. Luckily, no one fell in. We saw some beautiful views overlooking the ocean, we stopped to take pictures, we took water breaks every once in a while. We were the only ones to have ever hiked that far, since the last set of hikers who came on this trip with the school district. When we came to a finally stop we rested, ate, chatted and laughed at a few jokes. Then we were up and walking again on our way back to the bus. We were getting so exhausted. The question on everyone's mind was “Are we there yet?’’ We kept going and going till we made it. Wooo! we made it finally. Six miles there and six miles back.

Day 2: Arctic Valley
We'll start today with a poem by Daniel:
The weather outside is frightful,
but the sun was delightful.
Once on the top of the mountain,
it was cold, it was cold, it was cold.
It didn’t show signs of stopping,
it was hard but we kept on marching.
We finally got to the top,
it was cold, it was cold, it was cold.
When we finally say goodnight,
the weather wasn’t all that fright.
Legs are sore and tired,
it was cold, it was cold, it was cold.

Now let's hear Sheadon's take on the day:
Hiking the mountain was some work, but the thought of making it to the top kept me going. I didn’t want to stop or walk back to the bottom so I kept going along my sister's side. The mountain was higher than I thought it would be, but that thought wouldn’t stop me. I kept walking, taking breaks if I needed to. There was so much stuff to look at while hiking up the mountain. When I turned around I saw the bus we came in and it looked like an oversized Twinkie, but if you looked past the parking lot, you could see almost all of Anchorage in the background. When I got to the view of Eagle River, it was so beautiful because there was so much green and not so many houses. To me, I felt like I was on the top of the world.

Day 1: Kincaid Park
This is Ben Dexter with Write Alaska News reporting to you on Monday, July 16. Today students met for day one of Migrant Ed's Write Alaska program. During the next two weeks, students will be working together in the classroom as well as in the wilderness. Despite the early morning start time, students managed to stay awake for three hours in the classroom. It probably helped that the teachers and tutors were so charismatic and engaging. When asked how they thought the class would go, the students responded unanimously, "Awesome! I think it's going to be great!"
The class took no time before busting into a rigorous work schedule that rivals the difficult hiking they will be doing in the coming weeks. Students had to write, but the real challenge seemed to be getting the computers to cooperate. Still, the class persevered, made it through the classwork, then headed out to Kincaid Park for a short hike, lunch, and some play time. Now here's Will with the weather.
Thanks Ben. This is Will Wright reporting on weather for Write Alaska News. When students first arrived this morning it looked like we were in for a grey, wet day. However, by the time the class headed out for the trip to Kincaid it had turned into a gorgeous day with only some minor wind. This made for an enjoyable day out at the park. The class went for a short hike through the Kincaid stadium and along one of the flatter trails. The weather report looks good for the coming week as well.
This is Ms. Banks reporting on the wonderful world of sports on Monday, July 16, 2012. We had a blast playing ultimate frisbee and kickball. The ultimate frisbee game got very competitive as Presley's shoe broke in the process. This did not stop this beast of a player, because he continued to out score the other team. Both teams were actively participating and had a lot of fun! The kickball game was enjoyed by all- Carmela kept the game going as each team player had a chance to showcase their athleticism and kicking skills. We are all looking forward to more games and fun in the days coming!

The five senses poem.
The mountains of green
with pink and white patches of flowers
sky's of blue its sunny seems like we've
been hiking for hours.
The wind as cold as ice
little holes in the ground which held mice (voles)
paw prints in the mud, not quite understood
what it could be, it's an animal print, maybe just have to wait and see
Down below the mountain is the hot weather
The bunnies in the wilderness happy together
Its the end now, time to say goodbye to this beautiful place
The view of beauty that would put a smile on anyone's face

Believe in the incredible power of the human mind of doing something that makes a difference,
of working hard, of laughing n hoping, of lasting friends,
of all the things that will cross your path. Next year the start of something new brings the hope of something great, but anything is possible, and there's only one you and you will only cross this path but once. Do it right.

Bobby
Hi, I am Bobby K. I am from Anchorage, Alaska. I was born and raised here in Alaska. I have never left this state, but I wish to one day leave the state to join the Marines. After, I am hoping to become a comedian. On the way to my dreams and goals I've written a poem:
I was discombobulated
and everyone asked if it was contagious
I said it begins in the lung
It gets oblong and gets a tat
Shapoopie is what you exclaim when
you feel onomatopoeia and you
all of a sudden drive a 'stang but you
feel extremely micro in the head

Hello Write Alaska! Its Eric, I am 17 years old. I was born in Bethel, Alaska. I am a Yupik Alaskan, and I've lived in Alaska all my life and only left Alaska once. This year I will be a senior over at East high school. I have 1 brother and 2 sisters.
I like hanging with friends in my spare time, long-boarding and solving the Rubik's cube. Being outside in Alaska has been a major part of my life. Reading is one of my weaknesses. I love food and sleeping. I am a very laid back person and it's hard to see the dark side of me.
Nonsense Poem
I am superstitious about Pomeranians.
They scare me like Goblins and Avocados.
So I take them to the interrogation room,
then tickle them and give them gum.

Arctic Valley Poem
From the hike
comes the great view
you go all the way up, up, up
to see the world at your feet.
Looking down
at the half pipe like valley
to hear the birds chirping and to see the sun shine
just to sit there with the quiet and the green grass
Sitting at the top
you feel like a king
looking down at the trees
like they are all your subjects
Cadeesha
Hi, my name is Cadeesha. I'm sixteen years old and I have two brothers, I'm the oldest. I've been in Alaska for two and a half years now. I moved here to live with my mom. I'm about to be a junior at East High. My family is from the island of Samoa and I would say I'm proud to be a Samoan. I love hanging out with family and friends. I have a dog named Todo, he's a husky dog. He can get annoying sometimes, but he's a good listener. We both have one thing in common, which is that we love pepperoni pizza. We would sit on the couch and eat slices of pizza. I also love listening to music. I just want to get done with high school, go to college, and live my career.
The world is magnificent. It's blemish and phenomenal
That's dope and this is legit. I hear an explosion.
Learning how to drive in my momma's cool whip.

Josh
My name is Joshua. I’m 18 years old and I’m from Klawock, Alaska. I know a lot about fishing and I liked to fish back on Prince of Wales Island, because I know how the fishing works down on the island. I love to native dance and I would like to have a regalia
with my design on it, then we would go the celebration in Juneau, Alaska. I would
like to be a fluent native speaker and I would like to travel to Jamaica and
make music and get a concert promotion, mixing reggae and native music. I love to dance. We will be going
fishing in Hope tomorrow and I will be rigging poles. In Hope the bugs were horrid. I would like to travel back to Costa
Rica, go
shopping and get cool stuff.
"Fishing"
I love to fish in salt and fresh water. After fishing I was in Whittier and while I was screwing around I caught a 50 pound halibut. Jigging is the best technique to use when going for bottom fish. We like bottom fish, salmon, cod, ling cod and fresh water fish. Casting is the proper way of getting salmon. Snagging reds in Seward and dip-netting also works. We all like to fish but we all love to fillet and eat them. I have been fishing for 18 years. I like to fish because I'm a fool at it. I also love to go bass fishing and I like to go hunting. I like to go beach seining .

So who knows, one day you will see my name or my face on a magazine as a singer or a model! Or I'll be one of the best lawyers in the world.
This the first year I have done Write Alaska.
Five Senses Poem~
I have never felt so amazed by Nature in my whole life!
The lovely view, just beautiful! Made me jealous.
the feel of the plants brushing against my legs and arms, sent chills down my spine.
Wind sending dirt dancing up into the arm. Trees whispering secrets to each other.
The shadows were like giants standing by the sun.
Sadly, all things must come to an end, as we walked away from out spot, the beauty faded away. Leaving us all hoping that we all can see her again.
Sheadon
Wasup, my name is Sheadon. I was born March 9, 1995 in Hawaii, raised in Waimanalo for about 4 years, then moved to California until I was in 3rd grade. Presley
WUH UP! I'm an upcoming junior from East High School. I am really happy that I joined this program because it really helps me with my reading and writing. I also like it because they take us out all the time to far places that are fun to be at. Now lets talk about MMEE!
My name is Presley Hamo-Tyson Nu'umai Piliati and I was born september 8th 1995, in Honolulu, Oahu in Kalihi and was raised in Waianae. I'm Samoan and I also eat like one :) I came to Alaska because my family was all moving here and because it was better for us. TBH I really miss Hawaii, but it is what it is. I've never been to a cold place like this, so I still have to get used to the weather over here. I don't like Alaska because there's no ocean to swim in when it is hot, there are only cold, rushing rivers and cold lakes. Well, I guess I'm done talking about myself so aighty I'm out ;) ISLAND BOII chheeepono!
This is one of my poems I wrote as we were on the top of a mountain.

This is one of my poems I wrote as we were on the top of a mountain.
The fresh summer breeze
awakes the birds and bumblebees
I'm on the mountain up so high
as I watch the world live as planes go by
the scene up here never gets boring
as I spread my arms and dream of soaring
but now we have to leave the summer breeze, bumblebees and soft grass
and think about the hiking adventure back in class.

Ms. Banks
Hola Estudiantes! Welcome to the Write Alaska class 2012. My name is Ms. Banks and I am a Social Studies Teacher at the wonderful Clark Middle School- home of the mighty falcons! I am excited about teaching you this summer and look forward to engaging in several outdoor adventures. I am an avid reader of fiction and historical fiction and love to write.
